Over sixty percent of this reserve wine comes from our oldest vines planted in 1991 with the balance coming mainly from our 777 block planted in 2002. The hand-harvested grapes underwent a 5-7 day cold soak with an additional 7 days on skins after fermentation. On average about 20% of the grapes were fermented as whole clusters. The wine was aged in fine grain French oak (38% new) for about 10 months This wine went through malolactic fermentation in spring and was racked just once in February for blending. The 2009 Slapjack Creek Pinot Noir was unfined and lightly filtered prior to bottling on 01/03/2010.
This complexly layered wine has a deep ruby red colour with a nose of blackberries and violets with a richly perfumed undertone. The palate is densely packed with flavours of dark cherries and plums with hints of clove spice. The elegant fruit notes are supported by well integrated oak adding muscle and rusticity to the wine. The silky tannins linger in the mouth whilst the salivating acidity gives the wine a juicy long finish. This barrel selection was blended with cellaring in mind and will benefit from decanting if enjoyed in the first three years.
